Lavender should be grown in every home garden for ornamental and border effect. Commonly used for scenting purposes, it is also an edible herb—both the flowers and leaves can be used fresh or dried for flavoring.

SOWING:
Can be sown as early in the spring as the ground can be worked in a sunny, well-drained, well-limed soil. Plant seeds? inch deep and cover with fine soil, well pressed down.

THINNING:
Thin to 10–12 inches apart when plants are 2 inches high.

GERMINATION:
Germinates in 10 to 20 days depending on soil and weather conditions.

REMARKS:
To dry flowers for later use, cut stems on a dry day just before buds are fully open. Place in a cool shed or room. Place flower spikes on frames of stretched cheesecloth or netting for air circulation. When dry, remove flowers from stems and seal in wide-mouth bottles.
