Bean Scarlet Runner
Phaseolus coccineus

Type: Annual Climber
Height: 6–8 feet or more
Description:
This beautiful vine serves a double purpose — in addition to the extreme beauty of the bright red flower, they produce large pods of edible beans, similar to lima beans. Grow on a fence, trellis, or on poles.

SOWING:
Plant seed directly in soil outdoors starting in late spring after the ground has warmed and nighttime temperatures do not dip below 55°F. Plant 1 inch deep, 2 to 3 inches apart along fence or trellis or around poles. Cover with 1 inch of fine soil, firmly pressed down.

THINNING:
When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin, leaving strongest plants 8 inches apart or 3 to 4 strongest plants around poles.

GERMINATION:
Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.

REMARKS:
These beans will germinate best and be very prolific if you are patient and wait until the soil is warm before planting. Pick pods when young and often to encourage continued production. The flowers are also edible and can be added fresh to salads for a bean-like flavor and gourmet presentation.
Note: If you pick all the flowers, you will not get any beans.
