Bi-Annual – Height: 12 to 20 inches
This parsley is a favorite as it has immense foliage which is medium dark green, flat, and deeply cut. More flavorful than the curled types, it is gathered, dried, and put into airtight jars to be used during the winter for flavoring soups, stews, and sauces.
SOWING:
Sow seed outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 15 inches apart, spacing seeds ½ inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ¼ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants start to grow.
THINNING:
When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 4 or 5 inches apart.
GERMINATION:
Parsley is very slow to germinate, requiring 3 to 4 weeks depending on soil and weather conditions. It sometimes fails entirely if planted during a particularly dry period.
REMARKS:
Some gardeners like to soak the seed a few hours before planting to aid germination. Parsley is a host plant for the caterpillars of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly. Plant extra to share with them.
