History:
The early history of this unique watermelon is unclear, possibly originating in Russia. It appeared in seed catalogs in the 1930s and was considered a legendary variety.

Habit:
Round melons with dark green, nearly black skin covered in small bright yellow “stars” and usually one larger “moon.” Flesh is deep pink and very sweet.

Culture:

Plant seed outdoors in late spring after the ground has warmed and frost danger is past, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier.
Traditionally planted in “hills” (groups of 3–5 seeds), but can also be planted in rows 5–8 feet apart.
Cover seed with ½" of fine soil, well pressed down.
Germinates in 7–10 days depending on weather.
Matures in 90 days.
