Annual — Height: 12 to 24 inches
An heirloom grown since the 1600s, the multi-petaled flowers come in colors of blue, mauve, pale pink, rose, purple, and white. Flowers are nestled in a ring of fine, lacy foliage which gives rise to the other common name for Nigella, “fennel flower.” Love-in-a-Mist also makes an excellent, unique cut flower.
SOWING...
Plant seeds outdoors directly in the garden in a sunny location as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Plants do not transplant well. Scatter seed thinly and cover with 1/8 inch of fine soil, well pressed down.
THINNING...
Thin to 6 inches apart for the best blooms.
GERMINATION...
Germinates in 10 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS...
The balloon-shaped seed pods with green and purple stripes are highly decorative in dried arrangements. Plants will self-seed if pods are left on.
