Beta vulgaris

Matures in: 58 days

Description:
A choice variety, the tops have small, upright growth, allowing planting in close rows where space is limited. Skin and flesh are deep red, tender, fine grained and very sweet. A splendid variety for baby beets, canning or winter storage.

SOWING:
Plant seed outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant in rows 12 inches apart, spacing seed 1 inch in the row. Cover seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow. For a continuous harvest, plant every two weeks until the first of August.

THINNING:
When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 3 to 4 inches apart in the row.

GERMINATION:
Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil temperature and weather conditions.

REMARKS:
Young beet tops make excellent greens which are used like Swiss Chard and can be grown all summer. Roots are 2½ to 3 inches in diameter.
