A favorite salad variety with wide, wavy leaves and cut, irregular edges. Inner leaves blanch to a creamy white. Can be eaten raw in salads, cooked like spinach, or used to flavor soups, stews, and sauces.
Sowing:
Plant seed outdoors as soon as soil can be worked.
Rows 18 inches apart, spacing seeds 1 inch apart.
Cover with ¼ inch of fine soil, well pressed down.
Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow.
May be planted as late as mid-June.
Thinning:
When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin or transplant 10 to 12 inches apart.
Germination:
Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
Remarks:
Rich in vitamins A and C.
Blanch by tying outer leaves together three weeks before harvest.
