Allium schoenoprasum

Perennial
Height: 18–24 inches

This hardy perennial herb is easy to grow and can be planted with flowers, vegetables, or other herbs. Use as a border or in pots, either indoors or outside. The thin, green tube-like tops have a mild onion flavor and are used for flavoring salads, soups, stews, and stir-fry. Grows well in a sunny or slightly shaded location.

SOWING:
Plant seeds outdoors as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant multiple seeds (10–20 seeds) within a 3-inch circle. Each seeded area should be 24 inches apart. Cover seeds with ¼ inch of fine soil, press down, and keep soil consistently moist until seeds start to grow.

THINNING:
No thinning should be necessary, as chives grow best in clumps.

GERMINATION:
Germinates in 10 to 15 days depending on soil and weather conditions.

REMARKS:
When plants are four inches tall, cut outer leaves near the ground with scissors. Use fresh or frozen. When flowering, the lavender blooms make a very decorative border.
