SOWING:
Sow seed in late spring when soil is warm or start 4–6 weeks earlier indoors. Plant 3 to 5 seeds in a ring about 2 inches across; cover with ½ inch of fine soil. Each ring is called a hill, and hills should be spaced 6–8 feet apart.
THINNING:
When plants are 2 inches tall, thin to 3 plants per hill.
GERMINATION:
Germinates in 7 to 10 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS:
Seeds are dark brown. Young vines are heat and moisture lovers and benefit from compost-rich soil. When the fruit becomes the size of a softball, water only when the soil is dry. Withholding water about a week before harvest will concentrate the sugars and produce sweeter flesh.
